Antique Radio

I created this antique radio for the game "Wilson's Heart". This radio was loosely based on a Westinghouse Radio that was in the movie "A Christmas Story". I made some changes to the kind of wood grain, the tuner window screen, the speaker cover, the antenna and simplified the knobs/controls for our gameplay purposes.

The game model and the high poly I baked normals from were both modeled in 3ds Max, and I textured everything but the tuner window in Substance Painter. I love susbtance painter but I typically create any text-based labels or graphic designed elements in Photoshop because it's easier. I then imported the tuner label into substance so I could set it in the model, adding glass over it and dust/scuffs etc. I used a few tricks in substance painter and some hand painting to get the patina in the right places and dust build up where expected. It's a method I've gone back to for other antique-like models. Thanks for checking it out!

Close up shot of the radio. I enjoyed recreating the patina of certain areas, and the build up of oils in the crevices making them darker. Also tried to incorporate some believable dust on the radio, but not too much- as it is still in-use.

Here's a shot of the entire radio. The stair-stepped corners were particularly fun to model.

A shot of the top surface and funky antenna ball socket. In the game, the player had to find an alternate antenna arm to jab into this socket, allowing partial use of the radio.
